Calgary, May 8, 2008 – According to preliminary figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation (CMHC), total housing starts in the Calgary Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) declined by 20
per cent from 1,370 units in April 2007 to 1,096 units in April 2008. Year-to-date, total housing starts have
reached 5,752 units, up almost 39 per cent from the same period last year, primarily on the strength of
condominium construction.
Saskatoon, May 8, 2008 – Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary
results of its monthly survey of residential construction today. The release shows year-to-date housing
starts in Regina and Saskatoon continue to outperform 2007 levels by an impressive margin.
After the first four months of the year, total housing starts in Regina are on the strongest pace since
1986. Year-to-date housing starts totaled 378 units, a 20 per cent gain over the previous year. “Regina’s
rise in starts thus far can be attributed to the single-detached segment where construction was up 38
per cent after four months,” noted Paul Caton, Senior Market Analyst for CMHC. During the same
period, multi-family starts have fallen 12 per cent. For the month of April, there were a total of 93
starts in Regina, up 66 per cent over the April 2007 figure. Monthly single-detached starts continued to
outperform corresponding levels in 2007, with April posting a year-over-year increase of 45 per cent.
Foundations were poured for 12 multi-family units compared to none in the previous year.
